Bangkok, initially a small trading post along the Chao Phraya River, has evolved into Thailand’s thriving capital city. Its development, however, was strongly influenced by its predecessor—Ayutthaya, the historic capital of Thailand that existed from the 14th to the 18th centuries. When Ayutthaya was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767, the city was left in ruins. The shift to Bangkok was made when King Taksin, who had fled to the area after the fall of Ayutthaya, established it as the capital in 1768.
