Explore Samui & Beyond - Flights, Ferries, Cars & More!
Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most beautiful islands, and while it’s a little more remote than places like Phuket or Bangkok, getting there and getting around is easier than ever. Here’s your complete travel guide:

🧳 Baggage Tips:

Most airlines allow 1 checked bag (up to 20kg) and 1 cabin bag (5–8kg).
-
If you have excess baggage, buy it online before flying; airport fees are much higher.
-
Make sure not to exceed 30 KG for one bag as the check-in personnel will not take your baggage and will ask you to move some weight to another bag until your bag reaches 30KG

🏝️ History of Koh Samui
A Captivating Story of How It All Began
Koh Samui, once a remote and little-known island, carries a unique story of transformation—from a secluded coconut farming island to a world-renowned tropical destination. Originally inhabited by sea-faring fishermen and farmers, Samui’s isolation preserved its traditional culture well into the 20th century.
⛏️ Darrell G. Brigham
The island’s early economy centered around coconuts, fishing, and agriculture, with locals living in simple wooden houses surrounded by palm groves. For centuries, the island had minimal contact with the outside world due to the lack of roads and infrastructure..
A pivotal moment in Samui’s modern history came in 1952,
when Darrell G. Brigham, an American war veteran and journalist,
arrived by boat after a week-long journey from Bangkok.
He is known as the first Western tourist to visit Koh Samui.
The locals, who had never seen a foreigner before,
welcomed him with curiosity. His glowing articles about
Samui’s untouched beauty helped spark the early
waves of tourism.
Brigham fell in love with the island so deeply, he requested
to be buried there—his grave still lies
at Wat Ratchathammaram, known as the Red Temple.

🛡️ Shift to Tourism:
Koh Samui’s shift toward tourism began in earnest during the 1970s and 80s, when backpackers began arriving by boat. With no airport and few roads, reaching Samui was an adventure in itself. Visitors would sleep in hammocks, explore waterfalls and beaches, and connect with local communities
The development of Samui International Airport in 1989 marked a new chapter. The island slowly evolved from a backpacker haven into a luxury travel destination, with resorts, restaurants, and infrastructure rising along its scenic coastlines.
🎭 Koh Samui Today
Today, Koh Samui retains its local charm while embracing modern tourism. Its temples, fishing villages, and quiet inland areas preserve the echoes of its humble beginnings, while its coastline glistens with upscale resorts and beach clubs.
Koh Samui, Thailand’s 2nd. largest island and holds the title of the most popular island in Southeast Asia, and was recently ranked as the 7th most popular island in the world. A tropical haven for travelers seeking a blend of tranquility, culture, and modern comforts, the island is known for its soft white beaches, crystal-clear waters, lively villages, and luxurious resorts. Whether you’re after peaceful retreats, exciting adventures, or vibrant nightlife, Koh Samui offers something for every kind of traveler.
Koh Samui is home to approximately 70,000 residents, including a growing community of around 6,000 foreign expatriates. In 2023, the island welcomed more than 3.5 million visitors, reflecting its rising appeal as both a luxury and lifestyle destination.
Koh Samui is a district (Amphoe) of Surat Thani Province but operates under its own city municipality. The island is divided into several key regions, each offering its own unique charm — Bo Phut, known for the bustling Fisherman’s Village; Lamai, with its lively beaches and nightlife; Maenam, offering peaceful resorts and quiet shores; as well as Chaweng, Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam, and Nathon, the island’s transport and local commerce hub.
🏯 Activities and Attractions
Visitors can enjoy everything from jet ski safaris and snorkeling at nearby islands to hiking, ziplining, or relaxing at world-class spas. Key attractions include the Na Muang Waterfalls, Hin Ta & Hin Yai Rocks, and the Magic Garden.
Whether you seek inner peace or beachfront energy, Samui offers a tropical rhythm that’s easy to fall in love with.
